(ROCHESTER, NY)… The Rochester Americans fell by a score of 4-1 to the Toronto Marlies at The Blue Cross Arena on Friday night as they began the final weekend of the 2012-13 American Hockey League regular season. Despite the loss, the Amerks are still alive in the race for a berth in the Calder Cup Playoffs with two games remaining.

Toronto held a 2-0 lead late in the third period before adding a pair of empty-net goals in the final minutes. Marlies forward Greg Scott finished with a goal and two assists while Mike Zigomanis recorded a goal and an assist. Jerry D’Amigo and Spencer Abbott also scored for the Marlies, while goaltender Drew MacIntyre stopped 17 of 18 shots on goal. Cody McCormick scored the lone goal for Rochester and David Leggio turned aside 35 of 37 shots.

After a scoreless first period, which included a highlight-reel glove save by Leggio on a D’Amigo breakaway chance, the Marlies opened the scoring at the 6:28 mark of the middle frame on a power play goal as D’Amigo capitalized on another chance. Leggio made a sprawling save on a shot from the high slot by Greg McKegg with his right pad as he moved quickly across his crease, but the rebound bounced to the right of the net, where D’Amigo gathered the puck and banked it in off the Rochester netminder for his 17th goal of the season. Josh Leivo also picked up an assist on the goal.

Toronto took a 2-0 lead early in the third period as Abbott gained possession of the puck at the red line off a drop pass from Scott and took off into the Rochester zone. Upon gaining entry, Abbott executed a curl-and-drag move to use a defender as a screen and snap a shot past Leggio for his 12th goal of the season.

Late in the third period, Rochester got on the board with a goal from McCormick, who scored for the third time in the last four games. With the Amerks skating on a power play, Nick Crawford took a shot from the right point that went wide of the net, but bounced off the end boards and out to McCormick, who was stationed at the left post and swept it past MacIntyre for the goal.

Still trailing late in the game, the Amerks pulled Leggio in favor of an extra attacker and Toronto was able to notch two empty net goals to extend its lead to 4-1. Zigomanis scored first off an assist from Scott at 18:39, then Scott netted one of his own to give him three points on the night.

Rochester will play its final home game of the 2012-13 regular season on Saturday, April 20 when it takes on the Hamilton Bulldogs at The Blue Cross Arena. Game time is slated for 7:05 p.m. with all the action on Sports 1280 WHTK.
