2014 US PARALYMPIC SLED HOCKEY TEAM FEATURES LOCAL TALENT
Western New Yorkers Adam Page, Alexi Salamone and Paul Schaus make U.S. Paralympic Sled Hockey team

USA Hockey announced the roster for its U.S. Paralympic Sled Hockey Team on Wednesday and the Buffalo Sabres will be well represented. Three members of the Sabres Sled Hockey team have been selected to play for the stars and stripes at the 2014 Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia in March.

Forwards Alexi Salamone and Paul Schaus of Buffalo, and Adam Page of Lancaster, N.Y. are the Sabres representatives on the team. Page and Salamone were members of the 2010 American sled hockey squad that won gold in Vancouver. Schaus previously served in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Buffalo Sabres Sled Hockey is a 501(c) 3 not-for-profit organization that promotes the athletic abilities of physically challenged youth and adults in Western New York.

Eighteen players were announced as part of the roster, but one more player will be cut by Jan. 1, 2014 to comply with the Paralympic Games’ roster limit. The roster is subject to approval of the U.S. Olympic Committee. The full roster can be found here.

The two-day tryout that was held to pick the team took place in Williamsville, N.Y. last week. Sixty-seven players participated in the tryout.

The roster also boasts seven other players from that 2010 team including Steve Cash, the top goaltender from the Vancouver games; Taylor Chace, who was named best defenseman in those games and forwards Taylor Lipsett and Andy Yohe.

Salamone, Cash, Chace, Lipsett and Yohe won the bronze medal during the 2006 Paralympic Games in Torino, Italy.

“I am excited about the players we have selected,” coach Jeff Sauer said in a statement. “We have a great mix of Paralympic veterans as well as some younger players who are ready to take the next step internationally.”

Sauer is in his third season leading the U.S. National Sled Hockey Team.

The 2014 Paralympic Winter Games will take place March 7-16. All sled hockey games will be played at Shayba Arena.
