WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS DAY 4
Recap of May 12\'s action from the IIHF World Championships in Belarus.
Tyler Myers

Team Canada came out on top against the Czech Republic on Monday at the IIHF World Championships in Belarus, but the United States lost in a rout to Team Russia.

The Canadian team, whose roster features Cody Hodgson and Tyler Myers of the Buffalo Sabres, won 4-3 over the Czechs. Joel Ward picked up a goal and an assist and James Reimer made 31 saves in the victory. Former Sabres draft pick Jiri Novotny scored for the Czech Republic midway through the third period and San Jose Sharks forward Tomas Hertl tallied on the power play 49 seconds later to make it a one-goal game.

Hodgson totaled two shots in 11:18 of ice time while Myers skated 19:45.

The Americans were handed their first loss of the tournament, a 6-1 decision. Russia was up 3-0 early in the second period and the United States was unable to claw back into the game.

Alexander Ovechkin scored on a penalty shot and added a pair of assists. The penalty-shot goal against Tim Thomas proved to be the difference in the game. Team Russia is undefeated in Group B.

Justin Abdelkader scored Team USA’s lone goal.

The game marked Russia’s widest margin of victory against the U.S. at the World Championships since 1991 when they won 12-2.

Sabres defenseman Jake McCabe, playing for Team USA in his first World Championships, played 17:37 and recorded a pair of shots.

In other action from the tournament, Belarus beat Switzerland 4-3 and the French came away with another victory in the tournament, defeating Slovakia 5-3. Team France had downed Team Canada in a shootout on Friday.

Zemgus Girgensons and Team Latvia play Kazakhstan on Wednesday at 1:45 p.m. EST. The U.S. is back in action on Thursday when they’ll play the Latvians, who are led by Sabres coach Ted Nolan. Team Canada will next face Italy on Thursday.
