Group play is wrapping up at the IIHF World Championships in Belarus and one member of the Buffalo Sabres continues to pick up points in winning efforts.

Cody Hodgson recorded an assist in Team Canada’s 3-2 win over Sweden on Sunday. He currently leads Canada in scoring with six goals and two assists. He’s sixth overall in tournament scoring and second in goals behind Viktor Tikhonov of Russia.

Canada is currently tied for first place with Sweden for the top spot in Group A. Both teams have 15 points through six games played but Canada now holds the tiebreaker. Canada is seeking its first gold medal since 2007.

The Canadians rallied back from a two-goal deficit in the second period to defeat Sweden in overtime. Nashville Predators defenseman Ryan Ellis deflected the game-winner in past goaltender Anders Nilsson.

Defenseman Tyler Myers had one shot on goal in 19:59 of ice time.

On Tuesday, Canada will play its final game of the round robin against Norway.

Team USA picked up another victory on Sunday when they defeated Finland 3-1. Tyler Johnson of the Tampa Bay Lightning scored twice including an empty netter to seal the win with 46 seconds remaining in regulation. Brock Nelson also scored and Seth Jones had a pair of assists.

Sabres defenseman Jake McCabe played only six shifts totaling 3:30 and managed one shot on net.

The Americans play Germany on Tuesday.

Latvia, coached by Ted Nolan, will square off on Monday against Belarus but they’ll do so without center Zemgus Girgensons. The IIHF announced on Sunday that Girgensons has been suspended one game for spearing Russian forward Alexander Burmistrov during a game on Saturday.

Girgensons was assessed a major penalty on the play and was also ejected from the game.

“Upon reviewing the play the Disciplinary Panel determined that Girgensons’ violation of rule 538 b) (Spearing), and was a careless, dangerous and a flagrant violation,” the IIHF said in a statement. “The Panel agrees that Girgensons is responsible to control his emotions and actions that often lead to these dangerous situations.”

Latvia is currently in fourth place in Group B with nine points. They are two points behind the United States for second place and hold a game in hand. Russia is undefeated and leads the group with 18 points.

Girgensons will be eligible to return for Latvia’s final game of the round on Tuesday against Switzerland.

Group play ends on Tuesday. The quarterfinals are scheduled to begin on Thursday. The top four teams in each group advance to the playoff round.
