USA CAPS LAKE PLACID CAMP BLANKING CZECH REPUBLIC
Defenseman Anthony Florentino (2013, fifth round) notched an assist Saturday as Team USA closed the 2014 National Junior Evaluation Camp with a 3-0 shutout of the Czech Republic.

Defenseman Anthony Florentino (2013, fifth round) notched an assist Saturday as Team USA closed the 2014 National Junior Evaluation Camp with a 3-0 shutout of the Czech Republic.

Florentino, who saw a regular shift while paired with 2015 draft prospect Brandon Carlo, was steady the whole way with his ability to step into his check while displaying confidence when legging the puck out of trouble. The Providence College sophomore kept his shots low and was otherwise active offensively, following the play deep and filling lanes on the rush. He’d finish the night with three shots on goal in addition to the assist.

Hudson Fasching executed in his usual power role on a line with Sonny Milano (CBJ) and Chase De Leo (WPG). He entered the zone with speed and provided a consistent presence at the goal mouth. Fasching didn’t connect for any points but generated several opportunities including one midway through the third period that resulted in his shot from the low slot missing just high. As a whole, Fasching’s week was marked by a strong two-way work ethic and several hard, clean hits.

Tyler Motte (CHI) opened the scoring at 10:51 of the first period when he roofed a puck from the doorstep to give USA the 1-0 lead.

After a scoreless middle frame, Chase De Leo (WPG) crashed the crease for a rebound goal at to give USA the 2-0 advantage. Florentino sent a shot towards to the net to earn the secondary assist on the play for his first point of the week.

John Hayden capped the scoring on the power play when he got his stick on a Michael Downing point shot with 1:53 left in the game.

USA decision makers gave 2015 draft prospect Jack Eichel a day off after the Boston University commit amassed eight points in his previous two outings.

With their summer camp complete, USA Hockey will continue to monitor their under-20 stable leading up to December, when they’ll conduct one more training camp before naming the final roster for the 2015 IIHF World Junior Championship.

In Sherbrooke, Quebec, Victor Olofsson (2014, seventh round) recorded a brilliant shootout goal as Sweden surrendered a three-goal third period lead in a 5-4 loss to Russia in the final game of Canada’s 2014 National Junior Team Development Camp. Sabres goaltending prospect Jonas Johansson (2014, third round) did not play for the Swedes.

Pavel Buchnevich (NYR) and Ivan Barbashev (STL) each scored a goal and an assist for Russia, while Valentin Zykov (LAK) and Vyachaslav Leschenko supplied the other Russian tallies. Undrafted defenseman Sebastian Aho scored twice for Sweden. Axel Holmstrom (DET) and Lawrence Pilut added singles with Lucas Wallmark (CAR) contributing three assists.

Olofsson received limited minutes Saturday, but still showed excellent vision and puck control at right wing on Sweden’s fourth line with talented 2015 draft prospect Jakob Forsbacka-Karlsson and Adam Brodecki. His shooting skill was evident all week, with the 19-year old keeping opposing goaltenders honest by getting the puck to the net from all angles. With that in mind, it wasn’t shocking to see Olofsson hop over the boards for Sweden’s fourth shootout attempt and connect on a brilliant backhand-to-forehand move.

On Friday in Lake Placid, Olofsson recorded two penalty minutes while serving as the extra forward as Sweden was bested by Finland 4-2. Johansson did not dress for the contest.
