Now in its 11th year, the annual Buffalo Sabres Street HockeyFest has become one of the most anticipated summer events in Western New York for youth hockey players of all ages. Street HockeyFest continues to grow in stature, with more than 200 teams registering last year for the one-day tournament that takes over the streets surrounding First Niagara Center.
Teams of five players take part in a three-on-three street hockey format, along with a goaltender. Games are played on the streets, using nothing but hay bales and curbs as boundaries. The goalie is the only player in full equipment, with the others only using gloves, sneakers and a hockey stick. Helmets are only mandatory for those in the younger divisions.
Each team is guaranteed a minimum of three games in the all-day, rain or shine event, with the top teams advancing to the playoff rounds. Trophies are awarded to the eventual champions of each of the 11 age group divisions, with Street HockeyFest open to boys and girls 17 years of age and under.
Food and drink is available for purchase throughout the day, and the Sabres Store inside First Niagara Center features many specials that give fans the opportunity to cash in on some later summer savings.
