Sabres-Thrashers Preview

GAME: Buffalo Sabres (18-23-5-1) at Atlanta Thrashers (20-21-4-2).

TIME: Tuesday, 7:30 p.m. EST.

The Buffalo Sabres look to end their five-game road winless streak, while the Atlanta Thrashers try to avoid a fourth straight loss at home when the teams meet at Philips Arena.

Buffalo is 0-4-1 in its last five contests away from home, with its last road win coming against the Washington Capitals on Dec. 27. Atlanta, meanwhile, has dropped three in a row on home ice since a win over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Dec. 26.

The Sabres began a five-game road trip on Saturday and fell 4-2 to the New York Islanders for their third loss in four games.

Buffalo fell behind 2-0 just 5:27 into the game as New York scored twice on the power play. The Islanders added another power-play goal in the second period.

"That dug us a hole right off the bat," Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said. "Our skills guys -- I didn't like our emotion or work ethic on our power play. You have to tell me where Miroslav Satan was tonight. You have to tell me where Curtis Brown was tonight. Five-on-five, we were pretty decent. We still have a lot of work to do, and that's what ticks me off."

The Sabres conclude their trip with visits to Boston, Philadelphia and Carolina.

Atlanta broke out of its slump on Sunday, beating Carolina 5-2 to snap a nine-game winless skid (0-7-1-1) that dropped it from the top spot in the Southeast Division.

Randy Robitaille scored two power-play goals off assists from Ilya Kovalchuk as the Thrashers won for the first time since beating Tampa Bay 3-1 on Dec. 26.

"To us, it's the playoffs," Atlanta coach Bob Hartley said. "We can already say there's going to be a 10- or 11-team race for that final playoff spot. Two points is huge."

Atlanta is 5-2-1 all-time at home against Buffalo, including a pair of victories at Philips Arena last season.
