Ottawa 4 – Buffalo 3 (OT)
Saturday, March 16, 2013
First Niagara Center
Kyle Turris’ second goal of the day at 3:54 of overtime was the game winner as the Ottawa Senators edged the Buffalo Sabres 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at First Niagara Center. Ottawa (14-8-6) scored three times in the second period to rally from an early two-goal deficit to take home the extra point. Drew Stafford scored twice for Buffalo (10-14-4), who are now 4-2-3 in their last nine games.
Ben Bishop stopped 33 of 36 shots to earn his fifth win of the season for Ottawa, while Ryan Miller made 30 saves in the overtime loss to fall to 9-12-4.
Buffalo jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in one of their best opening periods of the season. Mike Weber scored his first goal of the year at 8:52 on a seeing-eye wrist shot from the point that found its way through a crowd and past Senator’s goaltender Ben Bishop. The Sabres went up by a pair thanks to Drew Stafford’s hard work in the blue paint. Nathan Gerbe’s shot from the right faceoff dot was stopped by Bishop, but Stafford crashed the crease to bang home his third of the year at 15:16. Both teams were credited with 10 shots in the first 20 minutes.
The Senators came into today’s game with a plus-14 goal advantage on their opponents in the second period, and they added three more to that total. Patrick Wiercioch started the comeback at 4:03 when he walked in from the blueline and blasted a shot past Miller from the top of the circle. Then, right off the faceoff win by Jim O'Brien, Chris Phillips fired a shot from just inside the blueline to tie the score at 2-2 at 10:14. With time ticking down in the period, Kyle Turris gave the Senators their first lead of the day at 18:57 on a wraparound that banked off Miller's right skate. Shots were 15-9 in favor of Ottawa.
Ottawa was clinging to a one-goal lead midway through the period, Stafford scored his second of the day at 12:06 to eventually send the teams to overtime. Stafford fired a shot along the ice from the left boards that changed direction in front of Bishop off Zack Smith’s stick. Buffalo held a 13-6 edge in shots in the third period.
With Christian Ehrhoff in the box for interference, Kyle Turris scored the game winner when he slid down low to Miller’s right and one-timed a pass from Daniel Alfredsson at 3:54.
