NY Rangers 8 – Buffalo 4
Friday, April 19, 2013
First Niagara Center
There will be no playoffs for the Buffalo Sabres this season as their loss to the New York Rangers has officially put them out of playoff contention. Brad Richards led the Rangers offense with a hat trick as New York defeated Buffalo 8-4 on Friday at First Niagara Center.
Ryan Miller started the game for the Sabres but was chased from the net just 1:13 into the second period. After shutting out the Rangers for the first 18:42 of the first period, a couple of tough bounces and one misplayed puck led to three goals for the Rangers in 74 seconds at the end of the first period. Miller allowed four goals in 2:41. His replacement, Jhonas Enroth didn’t fare much better as he also allowed four goals on the night.
The Sabres showed some fight in the second period scoring three goals, but the Rangers were just too much tonight. Mark Pysyk tallied his first career NHL goal late in the third period.
A relatively slow period turned into a disaster for the Sabres in the last minute and a half. At the 18:42 mark, Carl Hagelin skated around the Buffalo net and centered a pass that banked off Adam Pardy’s skate and into the Buffalo net. Only 57 seconds later, Brad Richards let a shot go from the wall that changed direction off of Christian Ehrhoff’s skate and went through Ryan Miller’s legs to put the Rangers up 2-0. With only 3.2 seconds left in the period, Miller whiffed on a clearing pass and Ryane Clowe was right there to take advantage of the mistake and give the Rangers their third goal in just 78 seconds. Shots in the period were 13-9 in the Rangers favor.
The Rangers picked up right where they left off at the end of the first period as Anton Stralman beat Miller 1:13 into the second. Jhonas Enroth replaced Miller in net and the first shot he saw trickled through his legs and was tapped into the net by Brad Richards. At the 12:55 mark, Rick Nash added another tally to give the Rangers a six goal lead. The Sabres got a spark late in the period, scoring two goals in six seconds to cut the Ranger lead to 6-2. Ryan Callahan and Drew Stafford both scored goals to end the scoring flurry and make the score 7-3. Seven goals were scored in the period. The Rangers led the shots category by the slim margin of 12-11.
Brad Richards completed the hat trick on a wrist shot from the top of the left faceoff circle. Enroth got a piece of it but not enough and the Rangers extended their lead to 8-3. Mark Pysyk scored his first career NHL goal on the power play with just 39.8 seconds left in the period. Shots in the period were 8-4 in favor of the Sabres and the Rangers outshot Buffalo 29-28 in the game.
