Buffalo 4 – Pittsburgh 2
Tuesday, April 23, 2013
Consol Energy Center
PITTSBURGH – The Buffalo Sabres don’t play the Pittsburgh Penguins very often, but they sure make it count when they do. For the second time in three weeks, the Sabres headed across the border to Pennsylvania to ruin a Penguins’ winning streak.
Thomas Vanek scored two goals and added an assist, and Ryan Miller turned away 40 shots, as the Sabres snapped Pittsburgh’s seven-game winning streak with a 4-2 victory at the Consol Energy Center. The win comes exactly 21 days after Buffalo ended the Penguins’ NHL season-high 15-game win streak on April 2. The Penguins are 22-3 in their last 25 games, but two of the three losses have come at home to the Sabres.
Vanek opened the scoring in the first period, then bookended it with his 20th goal of the season into an empty net at 19:27 of the third period to seal the win. This is Vanek’s eighth consecutive season of 20 or more goals, four shy of Gilbert Perreault’s franchise record of 12.
Steve Ott scored the game winner at 17:26 of the third, batting in a Mark Pysyk rebound to give Buffalo a 3-2 lead. The goal underwent a lengthy video review, but Ott’s stick appeared to make contact with the puck just below the height of the crossbar. Jochen Hecht also scored for Buffalo, while Pysyk, Cody Hodgson and Drew Stafford each contributed a pair of assists.
Miller stood tall in the Sabres net while facing 42 shots, including 21 in the final period. The Penguins attempted 75 shots, but had 22 attempts blocked and missed 11 others. Jarome Iginla took a game-high eight shots but was only able to score on one, and Pascal Dupuis scored Pittsburgh’s other goal on one of his six shots on goal.
The Sabres (20-21-6) will wrap up their 48-game regular season schedule with a home game on Friday against the New York Islanders at First Niagara Center. Game time for Fan Appreciation Night is 7 p.m.
Patrick Kaleta missed his second straight game with a hand injury suffered last Friday against the Rangers; he did not travel with the team to Pittsburgh… Ville Leino (upper body) and Tyler Myers (broken bone, leg) were also scratched.
